EN The Bailiff knife was designed by John Bailey as a multi-purpose combat knife, of course with the express intent of being thrown. You can throw it right out of the box, as the blade is prepared to be sharpened, but not sharp.
Speaking of the box: Manufacturer Boker has really upped the ante here. Knife, Kydex sheath and belt clip are shipped in a stylish form-fit foam box.
The end of the handle has a spiky point, to break glass in emergency situations. I and every knife thrower I met filed away this spike, which is only a safety hazard when throwing (grip the knife absent mindedly, and it really bites your hand). Of course I removed the factory paracord wrapping for smooth throwing from the handle.
The first time I got time to try out the Bailiff was at the World Championship 2015 in England. I used it for the Duel-Cup, where the knife has to be drawn and thrown quickly - the sheath is quite ideal for that. And, I won the first duel outright - but didn't get it to even stick in the second one.
So, after returning home, the knife got the usual test throwing routine. It turns out, for my natural throwing movement, the one-spin distance is not the usual 3m, but only 2.75m - the Bailiff is a fast spinner (despite the straight handle). Taking that into consideration for the throw, I managed to be fast in drawing it and sticking it consistently.
A thing that can come in handy are the recessions in the grip, they can guide your hand in gripping it. For example at 3m, the tip of my little finger (hammergrip) slides right into the lowest one. That means, I'll have more of the knife in my hand than usual, which counters the fast spin and gives me the additional 25cm for a full spin and nice stick at 3m. One spin back, at 5m, the little finger is between the lowest two recessions - again more of the handle in my hand, to compensate for the fact that the knife is doing more than one full turn at 2m flight. The Bailiff can also be thrown from the blade, but it does not feel natural. Throwing the flat knife, thumb in the grove on the blade, other fingers curled on the other side of the blade, the knife makes a half turn from 3m and stick nicely then.
John explained to me the meaning of the name "Bailiff": It's the old English form of "Bailey", his last name, which referred to the area between a castle and its outer wall (Castle court). Nowadays, a Bailiff in the United States is most often seen in the courtroom where he is in charge of the courtroom itself and security for the judge and all occupants. So to an American hearing the name Bailiff on a knife would be in conjunction with a person taking charge - and that's how John wanted the knife to look like.
So, I'm happy to have the Bailiff throwing knife, and will use it to train for and throw in the Duel-Cup. But for general throwing, it just turns too quickly for me, and with the hefty price tag, I also don't see me getting several more for training. You might want to look at the Ziel knife as alternative.

DE Das "Bailiff"-Wurfmesser wurde von John Bailey als Mehrzweck-Kampfmesser entworfen, natürlich mit dem Fokus auf das Werfen. Man kann es wie geliefert werfen, weil die Klinge zwar dafür vorbereitet ist, geschärft zu werden, aber eben noch stumpf ist.
Bezüglich der Verpackung hat der Hersteller Böker ganz schön vorgelegt: Messer, Kydex Scheide und Gürtelklammer kommen in einer schicken, genau passenden Schaum-Schachtel.
Das Ende des Griffs hat einen spitzen Zacken, um im Notfall Scheiben einschlagen zu können. Ich (und jeder Messerwerfer den ich traf) haben allerdings als erstes diesen Zacken ab- oder rundgefeilt, weil er sonst ein Sicherheitsrisiko ist (schieb mal ohne Nachzudenken das Messer kräftig in die Scheide, und der Zacken beißt so richtig in die Handfläche). Um glatt vom Griff werfen zu können, habe ich natürlich die Paracord-Schnur abgewickelt, die ab Werk drauf ist.
Das erste Mal ausprobiert habe ich das Bailiff bei der Weltmeisterschaft 2015 in England. Und es gleich für den Duell-Cup genommen, bei dem es drauf ankommt, schnell zu ziehen und zu werfen - die Kydex-Scheide ist dafür ziemlich gut. Das erste Duell habe ich auch glatt gewonnen - aber beim zweiten Duell steckten die Messer nicht mal.
Also habe ich das Bailiff, als ich wieder daheim war, gleich der üblichen Testwurf-Routine unterzogen. Und es stellt sich raus, dass die Entfernung für eine volle Umdrehung - bei meiner natürlichen Wurfbewegung - nicht 3m ist wie üblich, sondern nur 2,75m. Das Bailiff dreht also trotz geradem Griff sehr schnell! Mit dem Wissen schaffte ich es dann, schnell zu ziehen und dann trotzdem das Messer immer in der Zielscheibe stecken zu haben.
Als praktisch können sich die Mulden im Griff erweisen, sie erleichtern es, das Messer immer gleich in die Hand zu nehmen. Auf 3m beispielsweise (Hammergriff) ist die Fingerspitze meines kleinen Fingers in der untersten Mulde. Das heißt, ich habe mehr vom Messer in der Hand als für mich üblich, aber dadurch bekomme ich die zusätzlichen 25cm Entfernung die ich brauche, um von 3m mit einer Umdrehung schön im Ziel zu landen. Eine Umdrehung weiter hinten, bei 5m, liegt mein Finger zwischen unterster Mulde und der nächsten - wieder mehr vom Griff in der Hand, um zu kompensieren dass das Messer auf 2m Flug eben mehr als eine Umdrehung macht. Das Bailiff Wurfmesser kann man auch von der Klinge werfen, aber das fühlt sich nicht natürlich an. Man würde das Messer flach werfen, Daumen in der Furche auf der Klinge, die anderen Finger gekrümmt auf der anderen Seite der Klinge. Bei mir steckt das Messer dann von 3m mit einer halben Umdrehung gut.
John erklärte mir die Bedeutung des Namens "Bailiff": Das ist altes Englisch für "Bailey", seinen Nachnamen, und bezeichnet die Fläche zwischen Burg und äußerer Mauer (den Burghof). In den USA ist der "Bailiff" heutzutage zuständig für den Gerichtssaal und die Sicherheit des Richters und aller Anwesenden. Ein Amerikaner der "Bailiff" hört denkt also an jemanden, der zupackt und Verantwortung hat - und genau so sollte das Messer aussehen.
Insgesamt bin ich froh, das Bailiff zu haben, und werde mit ihm für den Duell-Cup üben. Für mein tägliches Werfen dreht mir das Messer aber zu schnell, und bei dem Preis kann ich mir auch nicht vorstellen, mal eben mehrere für das Training zu kaufen. Johns Ziel-Wurfmesser ist eine interessante Alternative.

FR Le couteau de lancer "Bailiff" était crée par John Bailey comme couteau de combat à plusieurs fonctions, avec priorité sur le lancer, bien sûr. Au manche, il y a une pointure pour casser une vitre - je l'ai enlevé, parce que ca fait mal au mains en le mettant dans l'étui. La ficelle parachute, ca m'a gêné au lançant, alors je l'ai enlevé aussi.
Bref, le couteau tourne très vite, une révolution entier à 2,75m, pas à 3m comme pour un couteaux de lancer plus standard. Moi, je vais l'utiliser pour la Duel-Coupe, l'étui Kydex est excellent pour tirer le couteau vitement - mais, aussi coté prix, c'est rien pour l'entrainement quotidien.
